Frozen Shoulder is a condition in which the shoulder joint becomes stiff and causes pain in any kind of movement. The bones, ligaments and the tendons of the shoulder joint are encased in a capsule of soft tissue. When this capsule becomes thick it restricts the movement of the shoulder joint. This normally happens when the shoulder joint is not used for some time due to some kind of surgery like fracture of the arm or mastectomy.
People with some conditions like diabetes are also more likely to suffer frozen shoulder. Women are more prone to this condition than men. Frozen shoulder typically develops slowly and can last upto 3 years. There are 3 stages of frozen shoulder :
Freezing Stage - In this stage any movement of the shoulder causes pain which reduces the range of movement of the shoulder.
Frozen Stage - Pain is less during this stage but the shoulder is stiff and movement of the shoulder becomes difficult.
Thawing Stage - The range of motion in the shoulder becomes better.
The disease can be diagnosed in thorough examination done by an Orthopaedic Surgeon or a Physical Therapist. The doctor is going to check the active and passive movement range of the shoulder. An MRI Scan might be done to confirm the diagnosis.
The treatment options for frozen shoulder are medications, physical therapy and in some cases Arthroscopic Surgery. The objective of the treatment is to control the pain and to preserve the range of motion of the shoulder. Painkillers and anti inflammatory medications are used for some days to achieve this goal. The physical therapist will teach you some exercises which will improve the range of motion of the shoulder. These exercises would help only if you do them diligently.
Some interventional treatments like Steroid injection in the shoulder joint will help in reducing pain and improving shoulder mobility. Shoulder manipulation under General Anaesthesia is another procedure which will help in loosening the stiff shoulder joint. Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery is done to remove to the scar tissue and adhesions from the inside of the shoulder joint. However if proper treatment is given then the pain during this period can be reduced and the mobility of the shoulder joint is improved.
