Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) or Posterior Cruciate Ligament injury is caused mostly in sportspersons while playing an impact sport. ACL, PCL and Meniscus are very important ligaments in the knee joint which provide flexibility to the joint and keeps the joint in place during walking and running. The injury to these ligaments can also occur in other people due to any accident. In this injury the Ligament in the Knee gets either partially torn or completely torn. The diagnosis is made on clinical examination by an orthopaedic surgeon followed by MRI of the Knee Joint. In case of partial tear the ligament can heal by giving complete rest to the knee joint but in case of complete tear surgery would be needed. One must wait for atleast one month from the date of injury to go for surgical repair. During this period cold pack must be applied so that the swelling in the joint goes away.
In cases of complete tear of the ACL or PCL Ligament the orthopaedic surgeon would use an Arthroscope to do the surgery. In this type of surgery just 3 small holes are made in the knee joint from which the Arthroscope and the surgical instruments are inserted. An implant is used to anchor the ACL or PCL Ligament to the Knee Joint. The Surgery normally takes 2-3 hours at the hands of experienced Orthopaedic Surgeons. The surgery is done under spinal anaesthesia and the patient is walking with support on the next day. Patient is discharged from the hospital in 1 day as the surgery is done by the minimal invasive technique. The implants used in this surgery are anchors which are used to fix the torn ligament to the bone. Dr Harjoban Singh is one of the few arthroscopic surgeon who is using fibre tape internal bracing for ACL and PCL reconstruction.

If you have an individual health insurance policy then this surgery is covered after a period of 2 years from the date of inception of the policy.
